He turned their waters to blood(Tigris/Mississippi
I incorporate drawings of superimposed city maps into my paintings, creating imaginary cities from disparate, yet sociologically relevant, times and places. The streets of ancient Rome intersect those of present-day D.C.; the Tigris and Mississippi Rivers intersect each other; present-day Red Hook, Brooklyn, is aligned with Faulkner’s fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. I interconnect locations where historical events have taken place then cut into the canvas and stuff sheer pockets of fabric with bits and pieces of the earth and its elements to represent buildings, bridges and neighborhoods. I paint to collapse the space-time continuum, to record the beauty and destruction of current and past events, and to remind us that they are inextricably entwined.
