Based on human figures, snakes, cartoons, intestines, and other biomorphic forms, these images explore ideas of power and menace. Through binding and fracturing forms, they investigate complicated relationships of power.
The Mother Courage character in Brecht’s famous antiwar play of the same name inspired the ‘Mother Courage’ pieces. Many of these images also draw directly from the photographs and videos coming out of Iraq that document the American presence there. The zipties and green medical gloves seen in the photographs and videos made in the prisons of Abu Ghraib also appear throughout the series. These images comment on the cyclical nature of violence, where the roles of victim and oppressor become intertwined and interchangeable.

The relationship between science and authority, as explored by Bertolt Brecht in his play ‘Galileo’, is the impetus for the ‘Papi’ and ‘Galileo’ images.
