Perhaps influenced by the Neo-Concrete movement in Brazil, where I am originally from, I perceive sculpture as a means to explore physicality. The restrictions imposed on intention by the physical nature of the body and the world with which it interacts have become the main focus of my practice. Following a very subjective notion of scientific investigation I use my time in the studio to test theories and explore the limits of how I understand the material world. Repetition and physical struggle are important aspects of my practice. What is represented in the object is a result of the collision between psychic and physical realities, driven by intentions that are distorted by the very circumstances of their expression.

The 'Pull' pieces begin with the simple question of how high or how far I can move a particular material in a direction with no assistance from tools or other support structures. 'Pull Up' was made by pulling plaster towards myself in an attempt to create a vertical form using only my body and the material. On one side of the sculpture are the impressions of my figure - sitting, squatting, kneeling and standing. On the other are the drips and clumps the plaster formed as it escaped my hands.
