My paintings are of television and film characters. Since graduating from the MA Fine Art course at Central St Martins in 1999, I have painted four series of works: EastEnders, The Royle Family, Anna and The Beauty Series.I am interested in how a viewer engages with a recognisable subject seen out of context, particularly when that subject has had the potential to be seen by many or is part of a collective cultural experience. Film and paintings share a fascinating relationship in terms of their ability to depict time and reality. I work from photographs taken from the moving television image, which enables me to capture a moment which has not been specifically performed for.

I am currently painting One Second of Moulin Rouge. This comprises of a series of twenty-four paintings, using each frame of one second of the film. The second I have chosen is of Nicole Kidman as Satine turning her head during a dramatic and evocative moment of the film. The viewer will be presented with the series as a whole, seen in a line around the gallery. It will form a continuing image through the separate paintings. Each painting will be the size of a widescreen television, and I will retain the ratio of the actual film. I have shown my work in group exhibitions, including The Centre of Attention, britart.com, QUODart, BP Portrait Award and Mark Jason Fine Art and have had solo shows at The Centre of Attention and nottinghillartsclub. I will have a solo show in May 2004 at the Eyestorm Gallery in London.
