By avoiding conventional standardised shapes and figures in my paintings along with the application of intense colour, I try to create and express the power and complexity of the most basic human emotions. Those emotions; pure and raw as they are, become instigators and catalysts in our lives, forming the purest expressions of our souls. Each colour’s combination can be linked to the memory of an individual, by the shape it creates and the specific combination of tones used.
As individuals we perceive colour both personally and subjectively. This picture of the colour can trigger memories from past situations, objects, places and in doing so will also reignite feelings associated to these moments.
In my paintings I try to concentrate on the value of the colour, its power, significance and beauty. Through the combination of many different qualities of the colour I comment on issues such as disasters conducting to human tragedies and also the role of faith and religion in contemporary world, although focusing on the emotions related to them. Expressing them, but not describing literately and re-establishing the enquiry on the perceptual, tactile level. Refusing the use of image of something, figurative representation, I attempt to present painting purely as an energy field in its own right, where the quality of colourful surface emanate and directly interacts with the eye of the viewer. Reducing or completely avoiding sharp edges means not trapping it in rigorist borders of the artificial and unnecessary forms. This lets the colour flow freely and interact with the others exposing its unique quality. Through simplifying the picture I aim to maximize the energy, the physicality of the painting, and minimize the imagery.
The surface of either pure or intense colour provokes the viewer, immediately altering the initial experience with the work, therefore allowing an intimate interaction to potentially occur. The viewer essentially is encouraged to stop, think, and feel. I hope the interaction the viewer has with the work is stimulating and allows exploration of emotions and the inner soul; perhaps subconsciously and honestly.
A significant discovery became evident in the correlation between intense colour and dim looming shape for me. The link from intrusive and extrusive shapes and their fusion with introverted and extroverted colour is relative to the experience of fear and despair as well as hope and happiness. Therefore, contrasting colours and shapes may compliment one another to create an emotive and powerful combination. This dynamic fusion enforces the engagement and heightens the complexity of emotional radiance from both form and colour and their interaction with the viewer to reflect and evoke raw, pure, emotions within.
Through the abstract use of meaningful colour and shape, reflection of the complex nature of human emotions may occur with the viewer and inspire interaction on a more intimate level. The once separate, lifeless two-dimensional object can enter the viewer’s territory and connect with the individual.
