55 bottles intervention/performance (2002)
My work involves spending time in places that might be ‘haunted’ by past human experience – or something else – like crossroads, stretches of water, north sides of medieval churches or inside a church at night. A photograph is an imprint of a specific moment; video footage captures duration, and these simple truths are the basis I work from. Setting up sound, photographic or video equipment, I let the essence of a place unfold. I record and re-present my experience, aiming to leave viewers with the uncanny feeling that they have just missed something, or that something is just about to happen. I’m interested in the extent to which, even in the 21st century, something older and less ‘rational’ within our natures might affect our responses in spite of ourselves.
