Architecture is a built expression of will and desire. Engaging with urban ornament, pattern, architectural ground plans through media such as drawing, photography and collage, and by setting these in juxtaposition, Helen Scalway seeks to suggest the complexity of spatial understandings and agendas in the contemporary cosmopolitan city. This image, ‘Factory,’ was created by replicating numerous times a single engraving from a nineteenth century engineering manual concerned with the functioning of textile machines in a Manchester cotton mill.
