British artist Fran Richardson studied painting at City & Guilds of London Art School graduating in 2006 with a distinction in MA Fine Art. She makes detailed charcoal drawings and monochromatic paintings that explore the nature of perception and representation in relation to the domestic interior.

In 2009 she was awarded the drawing prize at the National Open Art Competition, the Brian Sinfield Fine Arts Award at Pastels Today, and the Visitors' Choice Award at the Brighton Festival. Her drawings were also selected for the Manifest International Drawing Annual 4 and Drawing Room II, a survey of contemporary drawing at the Royal West of England Academy.
Concerned with the dialogue between corporeal and psychological space the work is a visual enquiry into our sense of reality, exploring the nature of perception and representation in relation to the domestic interior.

Central to the work is the role memory plays in eliciting the complex emotional responses that can cause our experience of the spaces we inhabit to become fluid and unstable. In this state of reverie we enter an ambiguous realm, located between waking and dreaming, where fantasy and memory undermine the expected certainties of the real.

Fictional compositions transcend the conventions of representation associated with the visual language of realism, estranging the domestic interior from ordinary visual experience so that it slips into an unhomely reflection of the human psyche or the projection of a fleeting emotional state.

The tension between the meticulous, realist style and the subtly discordant awkwardness of the composition seeks to question the enigma of appearances and our complacent acceptance of photography as a way of recording reality.
Her work is represented in the UK by Long & Ryle, London. She is a visiting lecturer at the City & Guilds of London Art School, London. She lives and works near Chichester, West Sussex, United Kingdom.
