My work is structured through repetitive activity and is governed by one organizing principle: the system behind the work is what dictates the visual outcome. What better example of this principle than what can be found in the building blocks of life? From simple molecular structures to complex organisms, life grows blindly, motivated by one rule: creating self-sustaining structures that foster survival. Inspired by this logic, I see my work as an aspect of nature. Just as life grows through the evolution of previous generations, the structure of my work is dependent on sequential logic.

One system may involve covering from ceiling to floor, a wall or room with consecutive rows of tape. Each successive layer conforms to the imperfections of the previous row where by a subtle crease evolves into a voluminous shape.

Another process may involve establishing a system through the organization of hand-made units. The enormous task of both building and attaching the units (at times as many as 20,000) underscores the complex relationship between a rigid and fixed system with the limitations of the material and maker.

I am intrigued with the aspiration of doing something with machine-like perfection while knowing that the fallibility of the human condition will come into play, creating unpredictable and complex beauty. I see these systems function like living organisms, with their own inherent logic and fragility.
