Bibliography
Joseph Hallam completed his Master Degree in Fine Art at UCE Birmingham in 2006 where he was awarded an Ikon Ma Award for his show zero.
Here viewers took part in an interactive performance where they negated a radio control tank through an apocalyptic film set. This could only be viewed via a wireless camera connected to the tank. The video footage was broadcast live into a public space where viewers could watch and react to the drama as it unfolded. The viewer was able to interact with the Artist as he played director and actor within the film set. A musician created a live soundtrack for what the viewers could see. The work explored the interaction between the viewer, musician, artist and film; looking at how each affected the other. This created a new way of experiencing but also creating film. The footage recorded was then re-edited to make the film zero. This has been shown at S1 salon in Sheffield, Open space; Reading, Air video; stoke on Trent and one minute video awards in Beijing and Amsterdam. In 2007 Joe was selected to do three-month residency at Het Wilde Weten in Rotterdam, which was funded by the Arts Council England. Here Joseph created the next chapter in his movie, the machines. This was a continuation of ideas he explored within zero, but working with new ways of viewer immersion and development of narrative. His recent work follows this further with the aid of his new ‘machine mutant video-headsets’.
