A Lost Connection (Part 1)
2009
Mixed Media, 12 x 11 cm
A Lost Connection (2008 – 2009) is a series of 52 paintings each measuring 12 x 11 cm.

Inspired by the music of ambient musicians Marconi Union, this series is particularly informed by their album A Lost Connection (MU – Transmissions 2008). The album centres on themes of isolation and disconnection and is motivated by images of withdrawing from the world into an inner, more personal place. Lawson’s response is painting that is unobtrusive. These 52 works seek to entrance the viewer into a form of contemplation through slowing down visual perception. It is only with time that the nuances of surface subtlety and the scrapes and stratum of paint are revealed.

Created through a process of layering and scraping oil paint on canvas on board, the series investigates properties of colour, surface and measurement. The common composition element is a band measuring 2.5 cm in width. This common element is a means of structuring the countless visual possibilities surrounding one specific measurement. Some works reveal the band in its entirety, while in others it is lost beneath layers of constructed surface.
