Laboro: Cyclic and Recent Work was an exhibition of paintings, drawings, digital animations and two collaborative projects by Colin Lawson and Graeme Walker.
Lawson exhibited paintings, a series of drawings on paper and an installation of digital painting animations.
His two large scale paintings The Gates of Ballard and Through Matter (2009) employ countless layers of mostly monochrome paint structured by grid-like compositions. The variable densities of these layered surfaces allow for a complexity that engages the eye in a kind of visual game.
Singular Enclosures is a series of nine drawings using oil bar on paper. These drawings employ diverse black and white surfaces with thin slices of colour to create a kind of visual score; active lines suggest changing rhythms, while variegated surfaces impart timbre and tone.
Present too were six digital painting animations which play out on two flat screen televisions. Employing ambient and experimental music by Marconi Union, Brian Eno and David Byrne, these digital works are a means of connecting Lawson’s physical painting to the music by which it is informed.
