My work is emotionally driven, inspired by my own life’s journey. Through my paintings, I explore a shift in our perception of our own identities, an emotional death of sorts. This is where who we thought we were dies allowing a new part of ourselves to emerge. The figures in my work to appear to be in a timeless void, this is inspired by the Buddist concept of time where there is no beginning and no end. I distill my work down to a single emotion. In my distillation process my figures are becoming more and more abstracted, so that the viewer is not identifying with a certain individual but an experience or emotion. Untimely my work is all about transformation, from all of life’s great emotions, oddly enough comes a personal transformation, which I find very exciting.

I work in oil, mixed media, acrylic and pastel. I build up layers to create a depth and mood. I will often let paint run down a canvas and even destroy a completed part of the painting. The emotional concept of not being able to control a situation is an important part of my painting process. In my work I use modeling paste, acrylic polymer products and cold wax to build up textures.

The Madonnas
The Silver Heron Gallery of Oregon, is proud to announce a show of new work by the artist Cathy Locke. The body of work on display from January 12 through March 15th is called “The Madonnas”. This work is based on how modern day life has changed the female archetype. The work explores the emotional shift of our perception as the female identity changes and transforms. The figures in this work are breaking apart, becoming one with some form of nature, be it a plant or water. In the distillation process the female form becomes abstracted, so that the viewer is identifying with a transformational experience.
“In the development of ‘The Madonnas’, I combined both representational figurative and abstract painting” stated Locke. Since women have always been connected with the theme of growth as mothers, she incorporated the way plants sprout, grow, and then die to create rich compost for new life into her work. Locke goes on to say, “I wanted to work with the idea that as we grow and evolve, concepts of our identities, as in nature, have the opportunity to transform.”
