The introverted nature of defining one’s practice has led me to examine the detritus and products of the studio. The results of painting whether intended as final or simply as tools of the process, contain marks that were created through a subconscious, incidental, exterior purpose. Questioning these marks through re-enaction, and reproduction I have tried to distinguish the function of their purpose.

I am creating a series of works where the pallet is used as reference material. The pallet being source material as well as a functional part of the painting process ensures that there is a continuous give and take between the two objects. This correspondence in kind or quality guarantees an ongoing symbiotic relationship; for to remain true to each other, as one changes the other must too. The more work the painting needs, the more complex the pallet becomes, forcing the painting to become equally complex.

By painting paint I avoid the unnecessary; my subject matter becomes my subject matter. I am creating a hollow practice that has nothing but itself and nothing outside of itself. So self-referential, so introverted, it cannot possibly look or find reason outside itself. These works are products of themselves, created out of their own matter.

The boundaries between source material and product become blurred. For example a successful area of a painting will be reflected back onto a pallet, leading to an ever blurring division. The painting eventually becomes its own source material.
