"Goodbye to most of the daydreams" - BCA Gallery Bedford - April 2009

Titled from Scott’s words as he began his trek back from the South Pole, this solo show consists of work made during a three month residency in Bedford. Based on a fictive proposal not to go to the Antarctic the films, sculptures and books are tied up with the more mundane narrative of my constant journeying back and forth between Ipswich and Bedford. The works were deliberately made without research and constructed entirely in the studio above the gallery and mostly under my table.

The Black Flag Game

When Scott reached the south pole the first thing he saw was Amundsen's Black flag. "Bugger" he said and headed home. The rest is history. This game revives that moment. The rules are simple. Take a black flag, go somewhere and as long as there are no other flags in sight, plant it. Hang around and watch the disappointment of others when they arrive second. Admittedly at first the game will be easy but soon flags will cover the globe and things will get interesting.

The Black Flag game possibly the first Face Book based artwork started at 1:00pm 24/02/08 and will finish at 1:00pm 24/02/18. The progress of the game can be tracked and Flag templates can be downloaded at:

Incidents at Sea

In the last three years my wife has repeatedly run away to sea. Where she sees adventure I see discomfort. These sculptures present narrative moments, miniature exaggerations, and inevitable conclusions to the horrors of adventure.
