Statement
I am inspired to paint in celebration of the very act of Painting itself. Toward this aim, the "subject" of the painting is secondary to communicating the joy in the process (however agonizing that in itself may be) of creation of the work itself. As a consequence, the non-figurative approach is what I mostly employ, although on occasion, a recognizable object may find its place in the expression of a feeling or emotion. I feel that my work should reflect joy, and where possible, wit.

I seek to utilize color and texture as my stock in painting. The challenge simultaneously is then to be able to restrain the exuberance that might turn the color strident and the texture overworked.
My struggle is to bring to the surface and make visible that which is not in the line of sight in the day to day objective world: to capture the unreality, as it were, rather than attempting to imitate nature and

render the likeness of an object.
The drive for my paintings is to depict the vitality and the "inner light" of the motif - the inherent vitality which is produced by, and infused with, the all-pervasive spirit or life all around us. And until that is made capable of depiction, I take recourse mostly to painting a "frame" around the motif to hint at the larger truth and reality uncaptured and existing beyond the motif.
I practice meditation, and it is from the process of meditation that most of the motifs for my paintings emerge. Images flash, and the later recollections are sometimes in color, sometimes without. My process is then to render that fairly complex and fleeting image in

a simplified drawing to give it a structure for the painting. Inevitably, I find myself complicating and distorting this structure, and the developments take on a will of their own. My journey then is the process of discovery to bring that apparently uncontrollable complication or distortion back to simplicity.
