My work is concerned with creating a sense of anxiety which is formed by constructing aberrations of familiar objects. This is the case in my work: The Strait Jacket (2002), Skin-Case (2003), Veil (2003), One’s Own Room (2003). It is my intention to take recognizable forms/objects and manipulate them so that their origin to the viewer has several possible sources and that their reconfigured meanings are directed to suggest a sense of the disquiet. There is also a further suggestion of apprehension that is caused by the type of fabrics that I select to construct my pieces from.

I have recently been considering the idea of “The Stranger” since I am a stranger to this land who came from Korea. I see even most Americans who live in the US as strangers in this land as well, not really natives, just like me. So we are all strangers in our lives, like in the book ‘The Stranger’ wrote by Albert Camus. This idea is especially exemplified in my work, Skin-Case which

references the body. In its physical attributes I have formed two suitcases to look especially skin-like. I was thinking that when we ready our suitcases to travel, we pack the most essential items that we expect that we will need. I think if we see someone’s suitcase that we actually see the person. The suitcases I made were aberrations of typical suitcases that included hair and exposed red fabric. With these two suitcases I rode a train into New York City and walked the streets there. I have another recent fixation in my work that is concerned with the idea of loneliness. This began with a book, ‘A Room of One’s Own’ by novelist Virginia Woolf. According to the book, she claimed that women must have a fixed income and a room of their own in order to have the freedom to create. In “a room of one’s own to create,” the room is not only a symbol of the freedom but also of the loneliness to create. Because of this loneliness and anxiety Woolf was able to create seminal writings but at the same time committed suicide because of the reality of what she was writing about. For that reason, sometimes, I think that the artist is a lonely person who extremely frequents the boundary between life and death. From One’s Own Room, viewers can feel, touch, hear, see, and
and experience, for themselves by interacting with my work. I want to show and create a sense of alienation for the viewer. In conclusion, like the work of the surrealist’s, I hope to form a dreamlike shift in the appearance and metamorphosis of the familiar which then allows the viewer to be reminded of their own memories and desires related to these recognizable elements.
