By pulling from a variety of images and compressing them into one surface, I hope to create many layers of visibility that work to reveal and cloak at the same time. Ferocity and suspense of action are recurrent narratives, suggesting an eerie tension between the subjects amid the collapse of a flattened, abstract background. In many instances there are things trying to crash in from the outside, disrupting and sometimes threatening with a strong focus on the recreational landscape of escape and conquered environment. For these particular paintings, my intention is to look past the camouflage and into the expanse where we seek the trophy or souvenir of something majestic, concentrating on the vulnerability of a still surface and my concerns for the violent disintegration or crumbling of real emotional and literal landscapes. The reference to natural objects and landscape is used as a device to keep the discourse as close to the real as possible without completely relying on literal interpretations of the surface or space. In this case the work becomes a commentary on a desire to contain something natural in a culture where environments are created to resemble a vague memory of the real.
