When I Look Up, I Fall Down, 2006, (1 min 6 sec), dvd video/sound, dim. variable Installation at DiVA STREETS in conjunction with the DiVA FAIR, NEW YORK 2007
Our recent projects explore states of being and patterns of thinking - from anxiety and restlessness to motivation and control - on personal, social, and institutional levels. Rather than work from a script or preconceived notion of a place, we often edit spontaneous footage, sound or stills gathered in an unfamiliar location with multi-layered audio. Much like we would construct a painting, we build a fixed-frame image using color and form, adding elements of sound and time that we drastically stretch or compress. Our projected installations create a physical and psychological space through light and surround audio, and we’re always curious about how people interact and react to this environment-within-an-environment. Our motivation is to make people pause for a contradictory experience: intimately inside one’s head yet a universal thought, requiring patience yet timeless, about that moment but lingering in an afterimage.
"Voshardt and Humphrey's video is a kind of visual play, carried out in several acts where there is neither a climax nor a dramatic denouement, stopping the same way it starts: right in the middle of a thought or feeling. The details and reflections are touching because they're universal, as a viewer, one can identify with many of them, giving the work an instant and lasting affect". - Suzie Walshe
