The 'Russell Hobbs' toaster in the kitchen… a package holiday in Greece where 'Elton John's Greatest Hits' is playing on a 48 hour continuum… the façade of gently blowing suburban curtains with familial secrets and discontents. Humorous at first, the work contains darker elements that hint at something more unsettling. An underlining theme of poverty, music and as the Clash once echoed What have we got for entertainment? are embedded within a multilayered critique.

Welcome to Godalming, 2003

Nicky Magliulo's work can be seen a series of captured momentary fragments exploring a hypertext of realism - mundane, funny, sexy and absurd all at the same time.Training in small east London video production companies, the influence of popular culture, consumerism, music and desire are ever present within Magliulo's work. Growing up in a 1970's seventies working class Britain - council estates, poverty and social services - and of Italian mixed parentage, Magliulo uses these politics within an unconforming, humorous critique of the everyday. Adeptly referencing corporate brands, universal rock celebrities, soap opera and reality T.V., a fabric of familiarity and cultural meaning unravels, multi-layered. Magliulo is a recent MA Fine Art graduate from St Martins and has exhibited within London, Berlin, Mexico City and New York.
