In my work I explore the metaphoric potential of the environment. My photographs fuse a gothic sensibility and performative elements with traditional landscape imagery. With a medium format camera, basic camping supplies, and minimal props, I create haunting, psychologically charged scenes that suggest fragmented narratives littered with fear and desire. In many works, traces of my body are visible as I merge with, take refuge in, and lose myself in the natural world. Others reveal evidence of some seemingly paranormal event—a fire burning in a river or an ambiguous encounter with a fox.
My explorations of the unknown landscape suggest a parallel, yet more internal, journey, a voyage into the unconscious. Bloodbath, a startling primal image, records an unspeakable confrontation with the ominousness of nature and simultaneously provides a glimpse into an inner darkness. My work builds on photography’s historic dialogue with mortality and memory, presence and absence. Important influences also include Freud’s concepts of the uncanny and themes of transformation found in myths. Like images from a vivid dream, my photographs and videos documents a poignant convergence of nature and the psyche.
