Kate Petley

Page 1 | Biography

The work of Kate Petley contains a profound sense of wonder at the shifting conditions of our everyday world and the place we occupy within it. Her conceptual emphasis articulates the sweet spot where handmade marks intersect digital technology.

Moving away from narrative towards sensation, subject matter is pushed out and an experiential sense of physical and psychological space fills the gap left behind. Petley is determined to pull a non-existing image out of thin air using a vocabulary that is not about language. By complicating the relationship of foreground to background, alluding to a distinct presence, her personal experiences are inserted.

Constellations of works evolve together in small groupings, deliberately enhancing the suggestive range of difference from piece to piece.

Kate Petley’s work is found in the collections of The Nicolaysen Museum, The City of Houston Airport System, The Federal Reserve Bank, Morgan Stanley Los Angeles, and numerous corporate and private collections throughout the United States. Petley is the recipient of a NEA/Rockefeller Foundation Grant. She has completed twenty-six solo exhibitions to-date, and her work has been included in venues such as the MCA Denver, the Martin Museum at Baylor University, the Museum of South Texas, the Nicolaysen Museum, Robischon Gallery, and Turner Carroll Gallery.

Her background includes painting, installation, public commissions, and sculpture. In 2015, Petley completed an invitational residency at the Franz Mayer of Munich architectural art glass studio in Munich.
