Luck of the Draw (detail)
Luck of the Draw mixed media installation; 130cm width / depth x 70cm height; 2007
Using the ‘wellbeing’ statistics from the UN’s Human Development Index (HDI), Luck of the Draw re-presents this information in the context of ‘a poker game in progress’. The work seeks to draw attention to the implications of geographical location/origin as well as contrasting ideas of random-ness and fate with the fondly held notion of autonomous control over one’s circumstance.
The installation comprises a subverted poker table, 177 playing cards overlaid with maps representing each country on the HDI and four sets of customised poker chips, each denoting a ‘currency of wellbeing’.
