"I’ve seen Jo Wilmot’s work develop during the past few years and it exemplifies the painterly aesthetic that is prevalent in contemporary painting. The way she smears the globs of paint onto the canvas reflects the uncontained gluttony of the aspirational, luxurious object, undermining its desirability; sometimes sarcastic but always cynical
Wilmot’s piece Headlight is of a slick sports car’s bonnet. The blackened windscreen hides what’s inside - could it be night-time or in a car park? It looks like a still from a film noir: oneiric, menacing, and anxious. As I am transported into the work, I am left thinking why am I standing so close to the car, why can’t I see what’s inside? This painting asks more questions than it answers; it makes me feel uneasy, abandoned, and like someone might be standing right behind me. Excellent."
