These images document a continuing series of interactive drawing installations. The environments incorporate light, line and pattern to transform a found (empty) space. Evolving from notions about the mechanics of the sublime and principles of user-centered design, these projects combine hand-crafted pattern elements with customized lighting to re-define a pre-existing space in terms of boundaries and pathways.

I’m continually amazed by the strong transformative power of the simplest visual elements and their ability to alter my perception of a place. I use ultraviolet light in combination with standard incandescent light and daylight to take advantage of the eye’s natural reactions to changes in level and quality of available light. The hand-drawn patterns are comprised of thousands of separate and unique units, repeated and assembled to enhance incidental vibrations and distortions. This combination of transitioning light and undulating visual stimulus creates a kind of virtual movement that affects the entire experience of being in the space.- J. Snyder 2004
