'What’s the matter? On invisibility and spectral presence in the work of Eloise Calandre'

The liminal works of Eloise Calandre explore the possible nature of an invisibility made manifest. Her photographs, installations, drawings, and videos approach spaces of the unseen and absences head-on, in an attempt to conjure up and make apparent those things that fill them. In one work, a displaced reflection of a tree sways with an unfelt and no longer present wind, in a puddle within the hermetically sealed, weather free space of a gallery. This uncanny presence questions how much we bring into an environment in our minds, peppering each place we enter with echoes from our past experience. We are also invited to consider whether spaces themselves in fact have a kind of memory of their own, held within the seemingly inanimate layers of brick and cement. A memory we can tune into communally, arriving at a shared experience of something that cannot be seen or drawn into the web of everyday cognition and language.
