Heart Burning Bright

And then there is a time in life when you just take a walk: and you walk in your own landscape.

Willem deKooning
Shy Flower
Like taking a trip, painting invites states of heightened awareness that suspend time and imbue the quotidian with significance and beauty. The improvisational aspects of travel become a structure for making my work. Spontaneous pours and gestures function as contingencies I respond to with translucent color, references to nature, polluted translations of Chinese idioms and collage elements.

The world of my work is nonverbal and prioritizes glimpses and perceptions over sudden recognition.

Inspired by Yuan Dynasty landscape, Dr. Seuss and the brilliant light and exaggerated foliage of 1960s LA, the spaces I invent invite imaginary wandering. Compressing the multiple perspectives of traditional Chinese scrolls into dense and vacillating layers ensures an instantaneous transition between diverse applications and reflects my experience of compacted global culture.
The pathways and caves in my magic world dodge hint at the familiar while remaining abstract. Since neither experience nor landscape is reducible to a singular vantage, my paintings approach landscape as a visual repository of personal and cultural associations, mediation, geography, dreams and déjà vu. Landscape becomes a flexible container for the whole of experience, whether past, present or projected.
