Galerie La Ferronnerie presents édith roux : euroland/undescape, photographies, multimedia - 3 Mar to 9 Apr 2005

Edith Roux (born in Paris, 1963) analyses with photography contemporary landscapes in what they reveal on the evolution of urbanization and our environment. EUROLAND* - Indefinite zones with no particular qualities are created between cities and the surrounding countryside. Scenery consists of shopping centres built along motorways, dual-carriageways, ring roads and intersections; of roads lined with billboards; and of soulless, all-purpose buildings.

In this era of globalisation, I felt that it was important to look at suburbia and consider it on a European scale. Given that the urban planning of these areas is usually a consequence of economic, financial or fiscal pressure, there is now a tendency towards homogenisation throughout Europe.

This series of photos represents 3 years work on the outskirts of more than 15 major cities within the European Union. With the concern for detail of documentary photography and taken using a large format camera, they present a personal view of these border zones. Will the green wastelands in the foreground, of no economic value, take over the suburban architecture of the background or will the opposite occur? The pictures of these zones of friction are a result of questions like this. Flattened by the lack of lines of perspective, no roads or tracks invite the viewer into the scene. The same computer-generated, cloudless sky serves to eliminate any reference to space or time and only a few signs offer any indication of linguistic or cultural variations.

Euroland series : 34 photographs, lambda print/aluminium 100x120cm, edition of 5.

Available during the show : Book Euroland , Editions Sujet/Objet, with texts by Gilles Clément and Guy Tortosa.

With the Underscape series, Edith Roux describes again the advertising landscape influence on dayly life. She realised this work inside Shanghaï underground (2003).

Behind travellers’s faces, one can observe large standard adverts, the photographic scenary reminding the 2 parts disposition of euroland pictures. Four series of photos are shown on flat tv screens fixed on the wall. With the press of a button, the film stops randomly on passengers images.

This work consists of 4 interactive DVD.

Edith Roux has also made the work DREAMSCAPE, consisting of a series of 32 photos printed on a 2600cmx60cm canvas, representing new buildings in Shanghaï and idealised landscapes. - A book ‘Dreamscape’ is also available, with texts by Paul Ardenne.
