Charles Danby and Rob Smith


Oxted England / The Quarry (2011-). An ongoing exploration of quarried and related land sites across Britain, informing the re-evaluation of Robert Smithson’s site/nonsite dialectic in relation to current technologies and to new considerations of the document and archive as ‘active’ methodologies within the production and presentation of contemporary works.

Charles Danby studied at Norwich School of Art, Kingston University (BA) and has a Masters (MFA) from the Slade, London. He is an artist working in areas of painting, photography and projected moving image, a writer, and a curator. He is a Lecturer in Fine Art at Northumbria University. Recent exhibitions include The Quarry at IMT Gallery (2013), Colour as Material at Gallery FAFA, Helsinki (2013), The Gathering at Yukiko Kawase Gallery, Paris (2012), Lanskip at Hotel Maria Kapel, Holland (2009), Lobby at Cell Projects, London (2009) and Pyramids at Galleria Del Cortille, Rome (2008). Recent curated exhibitions include Animated Environments a series of three exhibitions by Guy Sherwin, Graham Gussin and Steven Pippin for Siobhan Davies Studios (2011-12), Epilogues: It Started With A Car Crash at IMT Gallery (2011), and Grand National - Art from Britain (2010) - a partial survey of works by 26 British artists at Norway's Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium. He has written reviews, articles and profiles on contemporary art practice for publications including Frieze, Untitled, Art Review, Aesthetica, Flash Art and I-D Magazine. In 2012 he edited The Tanks Programme Notes for Tate Modern, London, and between 2008-9 he was Assistant Editor of Miser&Now Magazine.
