BOYCE CUMMINGS

The Concept of Versus dominates my work.
Man vs. animal, Machine vs. nature, realism vs. abstraction, old vs. new, finished vs. unfinished, high art vs. low art and losing vs. winning. I use a combination of Hard edge abstraction, traditional representational painting combined with graffiti and cartoon elements, all pushed through a somewhat surrealist filter. I received a scholarship to attend the School
of the Art institute of Chicago. Eight years later

School of Visual Arts and my own studio. I can finally scribble in the margins of my papers legitimately, and keep as many calculators around as I want. I think that because of my biracial make-up I have always been able to see a wide area of the “field” . I am accustomed to finding connections between things that seem at first to be very different. Often times the connection between things, is the fact that they are at odds. And I think that my paintings address these issues.
